University YMCA Bailey Scholars are empathetic, thoughtful, and action-oriented citizens leaders who contribute positively to our local and global communities. Bailey Scholars engage in critical dialogue about social justice, environmental issues, faith, and the international community and seek out new and innovative ways to approach real problems facing our world.

ENVIRONMENT
Parker Laubach is a senior in Environmental Geology at the University of Illinois. During the Summer of 2009, he interned at the Sierra Club Chicago offices where he developed a passion for issues related to coal use. He joined Students or Environmental ConcernS in Fall 2009, and leads the Beyond Coal Campaign to switch Abbott power plant from coal to natural gas. In addition, he has been involved with Engineers Without Borders since Fall 2008 and traveled to Cameroon for a site assessment in May 2009. He was also responsible for a significant portion of the grant writing for the Ntisaw water project, including the EPA P3 which recently awarded the project $10,000. Parker also serves as a tutor at Edison Middle School through VIS-À-VIS, and was involved in the creation of illiniCarbon, which is working towards creating a local carbon registry.
FAITH IN ACTION
Jessica Libby is a senior in Architecture. Since she first began at U of I in 2007, Jessica has been a member of World Vision ACT:S, formerly Acting on AIDS, and has led the organization since 2008. As leader of the organization, she has helped raise awareness and funds to fight the tragedies caused by AIDS, malaria, human trafficking, child soldiers and natural disasters while inspiring others to act on their faith. She has also served as a Bible Study Leader for Navigators Campus Ministry, Philanthropy Chair for Stratford Christian Cooperative House, and participated in mission trips to Zambia to teach orphaned children. During summer 2010, Jessica worked with Engineering Ministries International to design and build a school for orphans and vulnerable children in Liberia.
INTERNATIONAL
Jessica Loiacono is a senior in International Studies at the University of Illinois. Since transferring to U of I, Jessica has been involved in many student organizations dedicated to international issues, including Model U.N., Esperanza Guatemala, an international service organization which she founded, and most notably, Invisible Conflicts. Dedicated to exposing conflicts that fail to gain media attention around the world, Invisible Conflicts’ main project is a two-year partnership with Peace Together Uganda (PTU), a small community organization in Pajule, Uganda. Through the partnership, Invisible Conflicts (IC) provides school fees for twenty children orphaned by war and/or HIV/AIDS, assists in other community reconstruction projects, and serves as a liaison for PTU in the United States. In Spring 2009, Jessica traveled to Uganda for 10 weeks to more thoroughly understand the needs of the community and what kinds of resources were at their disposal, and in 2010, under her leadership the organization raised over $2000 for PTU while also taking on a second “invisible conflict” by sponsoring a school in Sierra Leone. Jessica has worked extensively to create meaningful partnerships for PTU, including applying for a Peace Corps volunteer and working with a group of engineering students to provide clean water for Pajule. Jessica is currently studying abroad in Senegal and conducting research on the methods and effectiveness of microfinance institutions.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Dominique Malebranche is a senior in Psychology at the University of Illinois. As a student, Dominique has served as an ally and an advocate for the student body. She has worked as a mental health advocate doing outreach for the Counseling Center Paraprofessional program, served as a Social Justice Educator for the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations and raised awareness about sexual violence as a facilitator for the First Year Acquaintance Rape Education (FYCARE). She has also volunteered with the Creating Opportunities Recognizing Excellence (C.O.R.E.) Mentor program, as a Mental Health Center Crisis Hotline Volunteer and as the Sexual Assault Awareness Month Event Coordinator for the Women’s Resource Center.
