Our Building: Capital Campaign
The University YMCA of the University of Illinois is one of few left in the country whose mission is devoted to supporting university student leadership, environmental responsibility, and social justice. Of the few Y's like us, we are the only one still in our historic home. This building is at the heart of campus and is being maintained to serve as a gathering space, residential hall, and office facility for many years to come. Recent renovations have vastly improved the building's accessibility, but our work is not yet done...
Although major renovations in Phase I are completed, upcoming phases include the following changes which require funding from our supporters. Any amount of support is greatly appreciated as we preserve, restore, and improve our beautiful historic building. When our Board adopted the Principles of Stewardship to guide decisions about our building, it helped redefine the goals of our renovation project as a way of advancing our mission. It also expanded what we wanted to accomplish and provided a framework for the future. Recognizing that this renovation will take place over several years, we will be implementing our work in several phases. Phases II and III remain:
- Basement Bathrooms: For all public areas to be fully accessible, we need renovate both the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The renovation will include new energy efficient lighting and water efficient fixtures.
- Third Floor Lounge: As part of our overall investment strategy, we will be upgrading the public space used by students in our third floor dorms which are in need of significant investments.
- Student Program Offices: The final element in Phase II is remodeling and upgrading the student program offices in our basement.
- In addition to increasing energy efficiency and upgrading electrical, HVAC, and plumbing throughout of our facility, there are a number of long term projects we are exploring that would enhance and advance our mission– ideas such as a Living and Learning Community, a green roof, solar energy, a rain garden or expanded food service.
