When you volunteer at the University YMCA, you provide leadership and talent vital to empowering people and communities to learn, grow and lead.

Some of the activities that volunteers of the University Y engage include:

  • Coordinate and staff Dump & Run, the Y's annual Recycling Program
  • Lead our committees and shape organizational policy
  • Document and archive the University Y's history through multi-media
  • Extend a hand to the immigrant community through the La Linea helpline
  • Help the Y's events run smoothly
  • Learn and serve alongside communities all over the United States
  • Tutor and mentor youth in Champaign-Urbana schools

Help keep multiple semi-trailers worth of used, but quality goods out of Champaign-Urbana’s dumpsters and landfills each year. This program runs through early May and early August with the collection of donations and ending with the BIG sale in late August. Volunteer 6+ hours and get first dibs on stuff at the volunteer pre-sale in August! There are many ways to get involved as a Dump & Run recycling volunteer. We are looking for volunteers interested in advertising for upcoming Y events on campus. We'd love to have your help with advertising all semester long! This would include postering, flyering, and chalking all over campus. We'll supply what you need. You may email megan@universityymca.org for more information or fill out the Apply to Volunteer form.

Like taking photos? The University Y always needs photography volunteers to help document all of the exciting happenings in and around the Y. You may email Megan at megan@universityymca.org for more information or fill out the Apply to Volunteer form.

Need to borrow a camera? No worries, we have a camera you can check out.

Through Immigrant-Friendly Communities, a global engagement initiative of the Y, there is always a need for volunteers to serve as interpreters or translators in community advocacy contexts. We are seeking volunteers with a proficiency in Spanish, Q’anjob'al, or French. The Y is also interested in learning more about your knowledge of other languages as well. Interested? Please email lalinea@universityymca.org for more information.

Occasionally we need help with basic office tasks like preparing mailings, scanning archival material or completing other basic office work. If you are interested in helping in the office, please fill out this form.

Video/Film volunteers will mainly work with current or recent film, taking video of events, interviewing our past alumni for the "Telling Stories," the Y's oral history project and uploading edited work YouTube. Some interviews of current staff and students may be included, as well as archival footage if any can be converted. Please email megan@universityymca.org for more information or fill out the Apply to Volunteer form.

Alternative Seasonal Breaks: Applications for Trips
Alternative Seasonal Breaks (commonly ASB) is a student-run, non-profit volunteer organization of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University YMCA. ASB sends U of I students on nationwide service trips four times throughout the year. During their fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks, ASB participants travel throughout the country to learn about and actively combat social justice and environmental issues.
