About the Honoree

John Price, a career YMCA professional, served as the International Programs Director of the University YMCA from 1950 to 1968. Under his leadership, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, and community members gained a special appreciation for the international richness of Champaign-Urbana and the special gifts that people of many cultures bring to the University of Illinois campus. Through his example and programs, students now spread around the globe a special commitment to international peace and understanding. John gave active leadership to the Cosmopolitan Club and International Student and Scholar Services (formerly the Office of International Student Affairs) where he served as a staff member following his tenure at the University Y.

Nina Stepaniants, 2025 Recipient

Nina Stepaniants is a Senior at the University of Illinois majoring in Global Studies, with minors in French and Political Science and a certificate in International Development. She exemplifies a deep commitment to fostering international understanding and human rights. Her academic and volunteer experiences demonstrate a passion for refugee and migrant rights, as well as creating inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity.

Nina has consistently pursued opportunities to engage with international communities. While studying abroad in Senegal, she explored human rights, policy, and development through both her studies and an internship with PARI, a reception point for refugees and immigrants. These experiences shaped her understanding of global challenges and inspired her to continue fostering connections across cultures. Upon returning to the U.S., Nina interned with FORA: Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America, where she supported refugees in navigating their new environments and building opportunities for their futures. Additionally, Nina has volunteered as a tutor at The Refugee Center and a translator for The Immigration Project, providing critical resources to individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they have the support needed to thrive.

Nina Stepaniants’ unwavering commitment to international development and human rights serves as an inspiring example of how one individual can foster meaningful connections across cultures and communities. Her work exemplifies the values of service and understanding central to the John W. Price Award.
