Monica M. Scott is a museum educator specializing in community engagement, exhibition development, gallery learning, and cultural programming. She’s especially interested in critical museum theory, how people experience museums, visual and performing arts, and the African diaspora. Currently, Monica serves as Manager of Community Engagement and Programs at the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures at UIUC. She is the Illinois representative for the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG) and a member of AAMG’s national programming committee. She is also a recipient of the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad award. For her Fulbright project, Monica traveled to Argentina and developed the virtual exhibition “The Erasure of Black Argentines.”
Monica believes transformative museums are anti-racist, their DEAI initiatives are transparent, and they foster equity through collecting, engagement, hiring, and centering diverse cultural voices. When she’s not in the museum, Monica enjoys being creative. She writes, sings, designs, and crafts. Her favorite activity is spending time with her family and close friends.
